Stressed Skin: One Thing You Can Do to Heal It

Summertime is ALL about chill-axing and rewarding ourselves for the hard work we’ve put in since the start of the new year! But that also doesn’t come without it’s stresses, right?

Making travel arrangements, getting everything done before heading out of town… Or maybe you’re a mom and doing everything in your power to keep your kids entertained, the home in order, and if you’re working, too…PHEW!!! That’s a lot you’ve got to juggle!

And you’d hate to admit, but…

Your skin is showing it…

it’s beyond lackluster or pimples pop up that you could’ve SWORN you left behind in your teenage years! OR your skin is so dry you’d consider piling on layers of Vaseline (oh but please don’t! I have better solutions for you!).

YES! Stress can lead to dryness! Who-da thunk?!

When we’re stressed, it takes a toll on our adrenals.

According to Ayurvedic tradition, when the energy surrounding our adrenals is depleted, our skin becomes dry. When you’re stressed, your adrenals are pumpin’ out adrenaline to keep you going. And now the energy surrounding the organ is gone (or well, diminished), and that results in DRY skin.

And in my experience, not only does dry skin lead to premature aging (hello! the skin is not receiving proper oil to keep pesky lines away!), it can also lead to oil overproduction. 

When the skin is not receiving enough oil, the glands go into overdrive. The catch is that this overproduced oil is thicker and ends up clogging the pores, which leads to…yep, you guessed it…pimples! (or dry, clogged pores)

So, besides the proper skincare regime, exercise, and the proper food, what else can you do?

Get plenty of water and…

meditate!

If you take 5-10 minutes a day to just sit in a quiet place, breathe, and go within, not only will you feel calmer and better equipped to handle the WORLD… Your skin may also peek a bit of glow. 😉

Here’s your little Basic Meditation 101 Guide:

  • Take 3 deep breaths in to settle down, go within, relax every inch of your body, and let go of your worries ~ just see them drift off and let the angels and The Universe/God/Source take care of that.
  • Imagine a silvery white light coming from above, surrounding you in a protective bubble or shield. Soak it up. This energy cleanses you and renews the energies within that have been depleted. 
  • Stay here in this relaxed state as long as you want. 😉
  • To avoid feeling loopy before coming out of your meditation, ground yourself. Imagine sending your energy down into the earth, down to the center/the core. Gather up Earth’s energy, bring it back up through your feet, and all the way through your body, out through the top of your head. Then feel this pure energy settling in within your body.
  • Slowly wiggle your toes and fingers to bring you “back into your body.” And slowly open your eyes.

Do this once to twice a day…or more if you’re up for it!

The more calm and centered your energies are, the more it will show on your skin.

And we ALL know stress usually comes year round! So, meditation should be done on a more regular basis.

    Love this tip! I have to really work at meditation because it can be tough to “turn off” your brain sometimes! Anyone have any suggestions that might help? Thanks!

      Hi Mary Kate! I’m covering this in an upcoming post, but essentially, there’s no way to “turn off” the brain. Our thoughts will naturally come and go during meditation.

      The important thing with the topic of this post, though, is to really take the time to relax and de-stress. So, that could include a hot bath, a cup of hot tea, reading a book, etc. :)

      You’re welcome, darling! As you probably know, there are many reasons for the causes of pimples, but this is just one of them. It’s pretty amazing how stress can wreak havoc on our skin!
